#DNAirobi

A workshop focused on DNA and ancient DNA research in Africa, held in Africa.

There has been a substantial increase in genomic and paleogenomic research on human origins and African population history over the last decade. However, most workshops and meetings focusing on this research are held in Europe and North America, presenting major obstacles for African scholars, institutions, and communities to participate in and benefit from this work.

#DNAirobi brings the conversation about DNA and ancient DNA research to Africa. It represents a step toward establishing more equitable collaborative relationships and increasing the accessibility of DNA and ancient DNA research to include a range of stakeholders from underrepresented parts of the world.

Our goal is to build foundations for meaningful collaboration and engaged interdisciplinary research among African and non-African geneticists, archaeologists, curators, community leaders, and emerging scholars interested in this work. The workshop will focus on recent and ongoing research on the continent, challenges faced in conducting and decolonizing genetic research, opportunities for capacity building, and fostering the development of international and interdisciplinary networks that will collaboratively identify areas for future research grounded in inclusivity and equitability. We aim to develop a framework and best practices for DNA and ancient DNA research on the continent that will guide future collaborative research.

Our in-person workshop was postponed from August 2020 due to Covid-19; however, we hope to hold this meeting in the latter half of 2021.

Updates will be provided to all participants as information about the feasibility of travel to Nairobi becomes available.

In the meantime…
